A SECOND LOOK
A question to carry into the reading
A percentage in a semaglutide discussion invites a counting exercise. On a blank page, make three boxes labelled counted item, eligible total, and counting period. Fill them from the passage and its table notes, leaving any unanswered box empty. Then check a second percentage without borrowing the first set of definitions. If the totals differ, write what changed before comparing the figures. Do not substitute a count of recorded episodes for a count of people, or assume that either equals a count of observations. Finish by expressing the comparison in words that name its denominator, so the percentage cannot drift away from what was counted.
Questions to keep beside the page
- What belongs in the numerator and denominator of each percentage?
- Does the second figure use the same counting period and eligible total?
- What wording would make a change in the denominator visible?
